Alfarería tratada con arcilla semilíquida o engobe.

La técnica fue empleada originalmente para cubrir defectos en el color original de la pasta, pero más tarde evolucionó hacia técnicas decorativas como el esgrafiado, el tallado, la pintura, la realización de trazas con dispensadores especiales, la marmoración y la taracea. En el esgrafiado, el diseño se realiza por incisión a través del engobe, para así revelar el otro color. Los alfareros de Staffordshire en la Gran Bretaña del s. XVII se hicieron famosos por las figuras decorativas, las flores y los diseños que crearon con trazas y puntos de engobe dibujados por medio de dispensadores especiales.
